There's a moment that comes for almost every Brazilian living abroad. Sometimes it's your kid starting school. Sometimes it's your parent getting older in Brazil. Sometimes it's just winter fatigue.
The question that comes with it is always the same: Can you move back and maintain a decent standard of living?
This article doesn't answer whether you should move back. It answers how much it costs, with real numbers from 2026, if your destination is northern Santa Catarina's coast.
Why so many people who move back choose this region
The coastline between Balneário Camboriú and Bombinhas has become the main return destination for Brazilians who lived abroad. It's not by chance.
It's the combination of four things that rarely come together in Brazil: good beaches, above-average safety, quality healthcare and education nearby, and a close international airport.
Porto Belo is right in the middle of this stretch. It has just over 22 thousand permanent residents, grows 3.2% per year, and receives hundreds of thousands of people in summer.
Monthly cost of living, in practice
For a couple without children, beyond housing, the monthly cost in Porto Belo ranges between R$ 4,500 and R$ 6,500.
Breaking it down:
Grocery shopping for a couple: around R$ 1,200 per month
Restaurant meal: R$ 28 to R$ 45
2-bedroom apartment rental: R$ 1,800 to R$ 3,500
Fiber internet 500 Mbps: R$ 100 to R$ 150
With the dollar around R$ 5.17, that puts a couple's cost of living, excluding housing, at roughly US$ 900 to US$ 1,250 per month.
Anyone coming from Orlando, Boston, or Lisbon knows what the same money buys there.
Schools
Porto Belo's public school system has an IDEB of 6.2, above the national average for early grades. If you're moving back with a young child, that covers the first few years.
For bilingual or international education, there are private options in the city and nearby. Itapema is 15 minutes away, Balneário Camboriú is 25, and both have the region's largest schools.
Higher education is in Itajaí and Balneário Camboriú — routine commutes, not relocations.
Health
In the city: basic health center, 24-hour urgent care, and private clinics.
Major hospitals are in Itapema and Balneário Camboriú, between 15 and 25 minutes by car.
Private health insurance in Brazil costs a fraction of what you pay in the United States. For someone moving back from there, this is often the budget line that brings the most relief.
Security
It's the factor that weighs most on families considering a move back, and it's where this region stands out.
Northern Santa Catarina's coast has low crime rates by Brazilian standards. Porto Belo has 24-hour police coverage, municipal guard, and video monitoring in the downtown area.
It's not a minor detail: it's often the reason someone chooses this region instead of moving back to the big city they left.
Work and remote work
The city lives on construction — there are over 380 projects underway — tourism, and services.
But the more relevant fact for someone moving back from abroad is this: remote work in the city has grown 40% since 2022. Many people moved back without changing jobs, keeping their contracts abroad and living here.
If that's your case, the numbers look even better: income in a strong currency, cost of living in reais.
Where to live
There's a neighborhood in Porto Belo that was entirely planned before construction began: Vivapark. Plazas, bike paths, school, shops, and thirteen buildings in the same master plan — it's not a gated community, it's a neighborhood.
For someone moving back, that has a specific value: you don't need to discover the city to know where the best area is. The neighborhood is born with infrastructure already laid out.
The September 2026 price list has 755 available units across 13 developments, with deliveries between 2027 and 2033. If you have a timeline for your move, you can pick the unit that delivers in the right year — and pay in installments until then, with a 2% down payment at signing and no interest during construction.
And there's one development already delivered, for those who want to move in right away.
